Thermostat or thermometer?

Setbacks. Stumbling blocks. Tragedies. Trials.

They come to us all unannounced and there is absolutely nothing we can do to prevent it. The only question is what will we do with them?

Setbacks can become a chance to correct our path. Stumbling blocks make great launching points. Tragedies and trials can season us and make us stronger.

Where we find ourselves in life is irrelevant in at least one sense. We choose who we are. Circumstances cannot dictate character. Things can push us, guide us, or motivate us but they can never force us to go to a place or become a person we choose not to.

So it really comes down to this. Are you a thermostat or a thermometer? A thermometer merely reflects its surroundings. It's warm in a warm environment and cold in a cold one. Thermostats however are change agents. They dictate their environment. Although "all hell has frozen over" they are comfortable because they control their own destiny and no one else is allowed near the switch.

Make decisions based on who you want to be and that's who you will become. Be proactive not reactive. And if you happen to find yourself in the middle of winter, it can be just as simple as deciding you prefer the warmth.
